For quite a while now, one of my major focal points in everything has been the concept of having a spirit of excellence. In our society, everybody wants everything fast. Fast food. Fast cars. Fast service. Fast everything.

I don’t have a problem with speed. In and of itself, speed is not a bad thing at all and can be quite a good thing. However, one disturbing trend that I’ve seen is that we often trade excellence for speed. Instead of producing something excellent that takes a little more time, we have chosen the road of producing something good that comes a little quicker. As a result, now we live in a short cut society where people are more accustomed to quantity than quality.

Again, please hear me. I don’t have an issue with quantity either. Both quantity and speed are important. But neither matter much at all if excellence is not at the core of it.

So how do we develop a spirit of excellence?

1. We have to want to do so. Accomplishing things with a spirit of excellence takes a little more effort than simply powering through to get something done. It takes a genuine desire to not only want to do something, but also to do it as well as possible.

2. We have to be able to differentiate excellence from perfectionism. They are not the same thing at all. Perfectionism always strives for an unrealistic goal and never is satisfied. Excellence looks at what is available and produces something of merit with the resources.

3. We have to have a standard. Our standard cannot be what people think, what political opinions state, or how other people do things. Our standard has to be the foundation of our personal value system that defines everything about how we operate as human beings.

4. We have to be steadfast. In other words, once we have a standard and recognize it, we cannot compromise on that standard regardless of what it costs. If it means we can’t produce as much quantity at first, that’s okay. If it means it takes a little longer at first, that’s okay. But at the core, we have to remain true to the standard and stay firm in that position. And interestingly enough, the more we begin to operate in a spirit of excellence, the more natural it will become, so both our speed and quantity will increase. In other words, a true spirit of excellence will in the end be more productive than simply trying to do things faster.

5. We have to be consistent. Excellence will always be dependable. When we look at the people we admire the most because of their achievements or influence, as a general rule, we recognize their dependability. They don’t give something their all one day and then do it halfheartedly the next day. They don’t live life in a roller coaster fashion, nor do they surround themselves with people who do. They are consistent in what they bring to the table and in the results they produce.

There are so many more things that can be said about developing a spirit of excellence, but it is true that if we stick to these five basic principles, we will see a difference not only in what we produce, but also in how we live our lives. This in turn affects those in our sphere of influence and makes us people of influence. And guess what? People of influence are leaders that change the world.
