James 4:4 ESV
“You adulterous people! Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Therefore whoever wishes to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God.”
The Apostle James isn’t as popular as many of the other NT Apostles, because he tends to play “bad cop.” Yet his words are no less inspired than Peter’s, Paul’s or Jesus’s, because the Spirit of Jesus speaks through him.
When James calls these early Christians adulterers, he’s NOT talking about sexual immorality. What he’s really saying is — you are sitting on the fence. Your loyalty is divided between Jesus and the world.
Too many Christians sit on the fence. They want Jesus, but not too much of Jesus. They want enough of Jesus to give up some of their bad habits, but not enough to lose their friends or to be branded a “fanatic,” or “Jesus Freak.”
Give me just enough of Jesus
To soothe my troubled soul.
Not so much of him
As to actually change my life.
No so much as to give away
Any of my worldly goods
Not so much as to give up my friends
Not so much as to be misunderstood
Don’t give me the mockings Jesus suffered
Let me leave my cross alone
Don’t meddle with the sin I’m in
Only soothe my troubled soul.
In the 70s there was a church that got converts by marrying into the worldly teachings. They instructed teenage girls to sleep with teenage boys in the hopes of evangelizing those boys and getting them saved. They earned the nickname, “Hookers for Jesus,” and were very popular for a time. Nobody talks about that church today, because Jesus put out their candle.
The same thing happens to Christians who marry into the world’s teachings. These Christians have one foot in church and one foot in the world. And if they don’t turn away from their spiritual adultery by making a firm stand for Christ, Christ will come upon them suddenly and put out their candle just like he did to the “Hookers for Jesus.”
Get ready! Jesus is coming.
And he will judge God’s people
Before he judges the world.
